Want to do work that really matters?
At Checkatrade, we’re building the UK’s go-to home improvement marketplace. Every day, we help millions of homeowners find the right tradesperson for the job, fast, fair, and without the faff.
We are seeking a curious, collaborative, and dynamic mind to join Checkatrade’s Data Privacy team during an exciting phase of growth and innovation. We’re more interested in your mindset, approach, and ability to make an impact than a rigid skillset.
This is a role for someone eager to get stuck in, ask smart questions, challenge assumptions, and play a big role in helping shape the legal foundations.
This is not your average privacy or legal job. You'll be embedded within fast-moving cross-functional teams, expected to navigate ambiguity, move at speed, and help others do the same.
This is a great opportunity for a junior-mid level lawyer with a strong interest in privacy and data protection to develop their career in a fast-paced, digital marketplace business. You’ll be supported by the Head of Data Privacy and sit within the Legal, Privacy and Procurement Group.
Forget long lists, here’s what you’ll actually spend your time on:
Advising on privacy risks in new products, features, technologies, and initiatives - identifying risks early and balancing them with commercial objectives.
Running DPIAs and embedding proportionate privacy-by-design across business processes.
Reviewing and negotiating data protection terms, including DPAs and SCCs.
Acting as an escalation point for data rights requests, complaints, and regulator contact.
Supporting incident response with risk assessments and legal documentation.
Streamlining and automating privacy processes through tools and workflows to enable scale.
Staying up to date with evolving regulatory guidance and enforcement trends, assessing business impact, and driving appropriate actions.
Advising on AI/ML privacy and regulatory considerations, with an eye on responsible deployment.
It’s not about ticking every box. It’s about turning up curious, ready to crack on. You’ll do well here if you bring:
Solid UK privacy experience, ideally in-house or advising digital, tech, or consumer-facing businesses.
Strong knowledge of UK GDPR, DPA 2018 and PECR, with practical application.
Qualified solicitor in the UK or the EU, or comparable legal advisory experience.
1–5 years PQE (flexible), ideally with in-house experience.
Proven ability to work independently, prioritise workload, and deliver under pressure.
Awareness of the privacy, regulatory, and commercial context in which marketplace platforms operate.
Proven ability to assess complex issues and provide clear, pragmatic advice that supports delivery.
Experience streamlining and embedding privacy processes at scale.
Strong oral and written communication skills to engage stakeholders across tech, product and commercial teams.
A can-do attitude, excited by new problems - even those outside your comfort zone.
Naturally curious, asking insightful questions and exploring new concepts with enthusiasm.
Resilient and adaptable, thriving in ambiguity and fast-paced environments.
Strong collaboration and outside-the-box thinking who is a genuine team player, building trusted relationships across the business.
A mindset geared towards technology and innovation, especially AI, including using tools to work more effectively.
We believe great work deserves great rewards. Here’s just a taste:
Competitive salary + annual bonus or commission (role dependent)
