Purpose of the Role
The Legal Counsel is a critical team member within humm’s Legal function. The Legal Counsel will primarily be responsible for providing support to the General Counsel for humm’s operations in Ireland, the UK and Canada and for the provision of legal advice and guidance to senior management and other internal stakeholders.
About the Role
Reporting directly to humm’s General Counsel for the UK and Ireland, the Legal Counsel will use their legal experience and professional skills to proactively drive continuous improvement within the Legal function and will operate with a high degree of autonomy to provide advice and guidance to senior management and other internal stakeholders.
The Legal Counsel must demonstrate the ability to work at speed within a high performing team and bring a commitment to continual improvement and a demonstrated growth mindset.
Customer focus is fundamental as is developing and maintaining effective trusted relationships with customers and colleagues across all humm geographies and levels.
The role requires the ability to learn quickly when facing new problems, being open-minded, highly adaptable to rapid change and able to quickly understand the essence of ideas.
Responsibilities
- Provide timely, practical legal advice and support to the General Counsel and business stakeholders across Ireland, the UK, and Canada, with a focus on commercial contracts, data protection and financial services regulation.
- Draft, review and negotiate a range of IT and commercial agreements, providing clear and practical guidance on legal issues and managing risk.
- Support governance and compliance frameworks by drafting and maintaining core legal templates, policies and procedures and assisting with company secretarial matters.
- Monitor regulatory and legislative developments relevant to humm’s operations in Ireland, the UK and Canada, assess impact, and provide clear recommendations to senior management.
- Manage escalated legal disputes and complaints, liaising with external counsel where required.
- Support internal risk management by identifying legal and regulatory risks, escalating as appropriate, and recommending mitigation strategies.
- Advise on data protection and privacy matters, including GDPR/UKGDPR and PIPEDA, and support contractual and operational compliance.
- Assist with regulatory engagement and reporting, including preparation of submissions and responses to regulators in Ireland, the UK, and Canada.
- Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams (Risk & Compliance, Operations, Commercial, Finance, Marketing) to ensure legal input into strategic projects and business initiatives.
- Build strong, trusted-advisor relationships with internal stakeholders at all levels and act as a point of escalation for legal issues.
- Contribute to the development of a “culture of compliance” and continuous improvement within humm’s Legal team.
About you
An accomplished contracts lawyer, with a particular focus on SAAS agreements and other B2B contracts, you will also have the following skills and experience.
- A qualified solicitor in Ireland with between 3- 5 years PQE gained either in a mid or large sized law firm or a regulated financial services firm
- An in-depth understanding of the GDPR as it applies to both contracts and operational processes, with knowledge of UKGDPR and PIPEDA being preferred
- Financial services regulatory experience in Ireland is an advantage, particularly in relation to consumer protection requirements
- A genuine desire to build expertise in the area of financial services with a focus on the provision of consumer credit
- An ability to manage disputes and litigation, and to co-ordinate external counsel effectively
- Strong commercial acumen and risk management mindset, with the ability to balance legal risk with commercial priorities.
- An ability to advice and influence senior management in a commercial, solutions focussed way
- Be comfortable working across multiple legal jurisdictions and reconciling different regulatory approaches
- An ability to manage legal workstreams on multidisciplinary projects
- Be able to stay informed on developments in areas of law relevant to the firm to support effective horizon scanning across multiple jurisdictions.
- Have familiarity with digital platforms and the role of technology in financial services.
- Display a cultural commitment to the humm’s values and behavioural framework and the ability to actively drive a culture of legal excellence and a “culture of compliance” within humm Group.
